The following are news and developments from the December 9, 2014, Rutgers Board of Governors meeting:

Board of Governors Endorses Legislative Changes to University Governance
The board gave final approval to a resolution endorsing legislative changes to the Rutgers Act of 1956 that, if approved by the Legislature and enacted by Gov. Chris Christie, would reduce the size of the university’s Board of Trustees and eliminate dual office holding by members of either of the two governing boards.

The Board of Governors-endorsed legislative changes, coupled with bylaws changes approved yesterday by the university’s Board of Trustees, would reduce the size of the Board of Trustees from its current 59 voting members to 41 voting members. Reducing the size of the Board of Trustees was among the recommendations of an in-depth review of the governance of the university by a task force led by the Rev. Board of Governors Professor
Dipak K. Sarkar, acclaimed for research that focuses on how stress promotes infection, cancer and alcohol-related diseases, was named a Board of Governors Professor. Sarkar is also noted for his highly influential contributions in the areas of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. He serves as director of the endocrine program at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and director of the biomedical division of Rutgers’ Center of Alcohol Studies. Donald H. Jacobs Chair in Applied Physics
James A. Harrington, an internationally recognized leader in the field of fiber optics, was awarded the Donald H. Jacobs Chair in Applied Physics. His achievements, especially in the invention of the hollow glass waveguide, have led to major advances in medical and national defense applications of fiber optics and infrared optical technologies. George F. Farris Chair in Entrepreneurship
Edward A. Ted” Baker, a professor of management, innovation and entrepreneurship at Poole College of Management, North Carolina State University, will join Rutgers faculty in January. Baker is nationally known for his books, journal articles, conference proceedings and essays which have significantly deepened understanding of how new ventures are created, shaped and managed overtime.
