Rutgers University in Newark Offers Summer Programs To Keep Young Minds and Bodies Active

Want your children
and teenagers to do more than play video games during their summer break? There’s
still time to enroll them in a summer program at
Rutgers University in Newark that can open their minds to new knowledge or
sharpen their athletic skills. Programs are

open to boys and girls, and
depending on the activity, are available for youngsters as young as six and as
old as rising high school seniors.

Engaging the mind
is the goal of three free summer offerings:

a summer earth ecology program.  Accepting high-achieving, low-income and/or
first generation college-bound rising high school seniors from across New
Jersey.  Program begins July 8 and ends

, July 7-July 13, which introduces
area high school students to some of the most important issues in bioethics
confronting contemporary society. Each daily session consists of lectures by
science and philosophy professors, a critical thinking and writing workshop,
and an interactive discussion of a case study or problem in bioethics.  Enrollment is limited and free; students must

Engaging the body
is the goal of both the Scarlet Raiders Basketball Camp and the Summer Youth
Racquet Camp.  The camps, offered at the
Golden Dome Athletic Center through the Rutgers-Newark Athletics Department,
utilize the Dome’s swimming pool, tennis court, basketball court and gymnasium.

: A day camp for youngsters to
develop their basketball skills and enjoy daily games under the supervision of
Rutgers-Newark Head Men’s Basketball Coach Joe Loughran, his assistants and a
staff of women’s and men’s college players. The camp is open to girls and boys
ages six to 17. COST: $160 for one week; $300 for two weeks; $395 for three
